The City will be handing out free spruce tree seedlings at our Arbor Day weekend event, April 28 at the Monticello Community Center from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. (or until we run out of seedlings).
Below is a list of some helpful tips/ideas to help prepare you prior to coming to the event:
- Bring a bag or towel to wrap your seedling in. This will help keep the root system moist during transport.
- CONVENTIONAL PLANTING: click on this link for proper planting procedures.
- OTHER OPTION: plant your seedling in a pot/container when you get home. This will allow you to grow the plant and control its growing environment (away from critters like rabbits) for a year or two prior to planting in its permanent location. When you decide to plant in the ground, simply pull the root ball out of the container and plant.
- NOTE: be sure not to plant the tree in the City right of way, under overhead powerlines or in drainage and utility easements with public utilities or those needed for access.
