The City will be handing out free spruce tree seedlings at its Arbor Day weekend event, May 6-8 at the Monticello Community Center.
Below is a list of some helpful tips/ideas to help prepare you prior to coming to the event:
Bring a bag or towel to wrap your seedling in. This will help keep the root system moist during transport.
CONVENTIONAL PLANTING: click on this link for proper planting procedures.
OTHER OPTION: plant your seedling in a pot/container when you get home. This will allow you to grow the plant and control its growing environment (away from critters like rabbits) for a year or two prior to planting in its permanent location. When you decide to plant in the ground, simply pull the root ball out of the container and plant.
NOTE: be sure not to plant the tree in the City right of way, under overhead powerlines or in drainage and utility easements with public utilities or those needed for access.
Arbor Day Youth Poster Contest
The City of Monticello invites you to participate in the Monticello Arbor Day Youth Poster Contest. To honor Arbor Day, local youth are encouraged to create a poster celebrating the day and its intent. This year's poster theme is, “Save the Trees!” or “Tree Preservation.” Click here for the contest rules and entry form.
